São Miguel, Portugal: The Green Island
São Miguel is the largest island in Portugal’s Azores archipelago, located more than 700 miles west of Portugal’s west coast. Nicknamed “The Green Island,” it’s known for its volcanic scenery, flora, and rich marine life, including whales. When to Visit: Mild weather makes May through September ideal, with spring blooms and fall foliage as added bonuses. July and August typically see the most tourists, as the weather is the most ideal. May brings the best opportunity to view peak blooms, and September is peak whale watching season.
