JET LINX BOSTON LOCAL HISTORY
Hanscom Field was established in 1941 when the Commonwealth of Massachusetts acquired 500 acres across Bedford, Concord, Lexington, and Lincoln, and was renamed in 1943 in honor of Laurence G. Hanscom — a Boston-area pilot and Boston Globe reporter who founded the Massachusetts Civil Air Reserve and died in a 1941 plane crash while lobbying at the State House for the airport's creation. KBED is now the second-busiest airport in Massachusetts after Boston Logan and the region's primary general aviation reliever.
