JET LINX INDIANAPOLIS LOCAL HISTORY

Indianapolis International Airport opened on September 24, 1931 as Indianapolis Municipal Airport, after the site was selected in 1928 by an Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce committee. In 1944 it was renamed Weir Cook Municipal Airport in honor of Col. Harvey Weir Cook, an Indiana-born World War I flying ace with seven victories who died flying a P-39 over New Caledonia during World War II. The airport was renamed Indianapolis International in 1976, and its current $1.1 billion, 1.2 million square-foot Weir Cook Terminal opened on November 12, 2008 as the first post-9/11 greenfield airport terminal designed and built in the United States. KIND was named Best Airport in North America by Airports Council International in 2010, 2012, and 2013.
